Dries en Matti ontdekten dat ze in hetzelfde appartementsgebouw woonden via een populaire dating-app. In een paar zinnen gaf Matti al meteen de indruk dat Dries een cinéfiel was met een voorliefde voor de Spaanse film. Het was het begin van iets, zonder dat ze het zelf echt beseften.
Dries and Matti discovered they lived in the same apartment building through a popular dating app. In just a few sentences, Matti immediately figured out that Dries was a cinephile with a soft spot for Spanish films. It was the beginning of something, though neither of them really realized it at the time.

Hun eerste ontmoeting in levende lijve vond plaats bij Matti thuis. Dries maakte de korte oversteek om samen naar de queer-film Jonas te kijken, maar dat gebeurde niet. De klik was er direct. Urenlang praatten ze met elkaar, het nummer Chalouper van Gaël Faye kwam meerdere keren langs, en al snel werd het ‘hun nummer’.
Their first in-person meeting took place at Matti’s place. Dries made the short walk over to watch the queer film Jonas, but that didn’t happen. The connection was instant. They spent hours talking, the song Chalouper by Gaël Faye came up repeatedly, and soon enough, it became ‘their song.’

Na veel berichten en dates was het Dries die als eerste de moed had om de woorden ‘ik zie je graag’ te sturen.
After a period of texting and more dates, Dries was the first to muster the courage to send the words, “I love you.”

Met Valentijn hadden ze een typische date, en zoals het een cliché wil, gingen ze uit eten. Eetcafé Multatuli in de Gentse binnenstad was de plek. Daar, met mondmaskers en alles, stelde Matti de vraag: “Zijn wij nu eigenlijk een koppel?” Het antwoord was allesbehalve verrassend.
For Valentine’s Day, they had a cliché date, deciding to go out for dinner. Eetcafé Multatuli, a well-known spot in the heart of Ghent, was the choice. It was there, with masks still on, that Matti asked, “So, are we a couple now?” The answer, of course, was clear.

Diezelfde date werd overschaduwd door de corona-uitbraak. Ondanks de voorzorgsmaatregelen raakte Matti besmet en niet veel later was ook Dries aan de beurt. Een week lang waren ze noodgedwongen elkaars knuffelcontact in Dries’ appartement. Matti was nooit meer vertrokken.
That date was overshadowed by the COVID outbreak. Despite all precautions, Matti got infected, and soon after, Dries was too. For a week, they were forced to be each other’s ‘bubble’ in Dries’ apartment. Matti never left.

Na een tijdje kreeg Matti groen licht om zijn appartement op te zeggen, en drie maanden later woonden ze officieel samen. Het leek alsof ze altijd al samen hadden moeten wonen.
After a while, Matti finally got the green light to give up his apartment, and three months later, they officially moved in together. It felt as though they’d always been meant to live together.

Twee jaar later, op een gewone maandag, vroeg Dries Matti ten huwelijk. Het appartement stond vol kaarsen, Chalouper speelde op de achtergrond en op de grond lag een kapotgeblazen folieballon in de vorm van een kreeft. Dries had duidelijk wat zenuwen, maar het was perfect.
Two years later, on an ordinary Monday, Dries proposed to Matti. The apartment was filled with candles, Chalouper was playing in the background, and on the floor lay a deflated foil balloon in the shape of a lobster. Dries was clearly nervous, but it was perfect.
